Green Roofs’ refer to a building that has a layer of vegetation planted over a waterproofing system.
Many green roofs incorporate concrete, marble or IPE wood tiles set on height/slope adjustable pedestals, which raises the walking surface above the roof membrane allowing for proper drainage below the walking surface.
In addition to providing an attractive roof top outdoor area, green roofs’ provide many environmental benefits, such as, stormwater management ( slows down water run off after heavy storms, thereby, reducing the stress on waste water treatment plants), increases R-value, keeps interior space cooler, lessens the load on HVAC equipment, protects the waterproofing membrane, reduces Urban Heat Island Effect& improves air quality.
There are two primary forms of green roofing: intensive and extensive. These are differentiated by the amount of vegetation utilized. While extensive green roofs can support up to 25 pounds of vegetation per square foot, intensive green roofs can hold 150 pounds per square foot.
Some green roofs are installed in one large integrated section, while modular green roofs use small portable planting beds placed together to create a larger green roof. The modular units are often plastic or metal trays filled with growing medium. Modular green roofs can be installed incrementally and are easily removed for maintenance and inspection of the roof layers underneath.
